Epicloud might be one of my favorite albums of all time

spoonerismz:

It shows me that the man who wrote the angriest music of all time with an extreme bipolar disorder and terrible drug habits can overcome everything difficult in his life. He has composed incredibly optimistic and fun songs, having turned his life around, and reminds me that no matter how stupid the shit in my life is how much bullshit is going on, there’s always something to be happy about.

That should be good enough for everyone else, and if you have a problem with that, kindly go fuck yourself and find the nearest Asking Alexandria concert.

I would really love to start a progressive rock/metal band sometime soon…

mistmanx:

…as I think I’m getting on top of my work, got a rhythm going and so on. Would preferably like to have people going to Uni of Southampton or who live in the Southampton area.

If you’re interested, drop me a message or reply to this or whatever :) In terms of what instruments I need… anything really! I’d like the idea to be a a group of multi-instrumentalists, who brings their own style to the instruments they play. However, if you only play one instrument, you’re more than welcome to be a part of this too! Even if you’re a guitar, cello, flute, bassoon or even mellotron player, as long as you’re interested in progressive rock, or even just expanding on a classical rock format, I’d love to see what you have to offer! One thing… especially if you’re a rhythm instrument player, especially a drummer, be prepared to think in EXTREMELY strange and weird time signatures, as well as breaking up more standard signatures into funky additive time signatures.

Devin Townsend Band - Accelerated Evolution

Really underrated album. Every song is pretty fantastic.

Love it, especially Storm. A rip-roaring song, I love to sing along to, EXCEPT the really high notes really close to the end xD

Prog on, my friends

TO ALL THE PROG BLOGS THAT FOLLOW ME

And anybody trawling through prog related tags.

Honestly, I bought this album yesterday. Oh man.

It’s called The Black Chord and it’s by a band called Astra. It was released in April of this year.

So yeah, we’re talking new prog rock.

And this stuff is crazy, dreamy, spacey. Psychedelic like Floyd with the breathtaking musicianship of King Crimson. This definitely harkens back to the “good old days” of prog rock, 69-75, but with a breath of fresh air of a new band with their own influences and modern production.

It’s their second album. I’m going to be buying their first album very soon. Whilst The Black Chord has only one song exceeding that golden ten minute mark (the title track, probably my favourite on the album) with the top and tailing tracks getting close but not close enough, their first album has four over the ten minute mark, and I’m very excited to listen to it, especially as it runs for about half an hour longer than this second offering.

Of course, I’m not at all taking away from this album. Lacking some of the noodling from the first album, it comes in at around the same time as classic prog albums like In the Court and Foxtrot. And my god, I don’t understand why these guys haven’t got more exposure. They are sure to be loved by new and old fans of prog alike.

I managed to get a copy in HMV for £10, which seems to be the rough price it goes for. These guys are still building their reputation, but by god with these first two albums, they’re building up their names as future kings of prog. I certainly don’t mind paying a tenner to support them, and will definitely be spending some cash on that first album of theirs. I want to see them tour now, and I want them over here in the UK.

Sorry for any rambling that may have occurred there, I’m just absolutely loving this album, it excites me and just makes me happy. That such a band exists today and is doing such a brilliant job makes me very glad. Perhaps this heralds a new wave of prog?

tl;dr? If you like any prog rock or metal, go and buy The Black Chord by Astra, you won’t regret it. I can already sense it’s gonna be in my top ten albums of the year.
